Museum Sønderjylland chooses KINN Studio

On 21 June 2026 KINN Studio won the tender for Augustenborgernes storhed og fald, the special exhibition that Museum Sønderjylland opens at Sønderborg Slot in 2027. It fills seven rooms on the first floor of the castle's west wing, around 400 square metres, and runs for about nine months.

The dukes of Augustenborg were a side branch of the Danish royal house. Over five generations they rose from a modest starting point to a position above everyone else in Denmark and Sønderjylland apart from the royal family itself, with Augustenborg Slot and the ducal court as their centre. Then they aimed higher still, joined the Schleswig-Holstein uprising of 1848, lost, and went into exile. In 1852 they had to hand over castles and estates to the Danish state.

It is a family chronicle about power, status, ambition and fall, and at the same time a story about the move from dynastic states to modern nation states, with Sønderjylland and Denmark at the centre. The rooms are part of the design: eighteenth and nineteenth century interiors built up around original objects from the museum's own collection, from Frederiksborgmuseet and from other lenders, combined with film, sound and digital installations.

Alongside the special exhibition we design a smaller permanent version, installed at Sønderborg Slot once the main exhibition comes down, so the central stories and the museum's own objects stay on show.
